Oregon Convention Center

With nearly one million square feet, the Oregon Convention Center (OCC) reigns as the largest convention facility in the Pacific Northwest.

Currently, the facility offers 255,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, 50 meeting rooms, two grand ballrooms, full-service catering and an 800-space, weather-protected parking garage.

Even without a car, the Oregon Convention Center is exceedingly accessible. The facility is located on TriMet’s MAX light rail line and has its own designated station. Since both the Oregon Convention Center and the downtown hotel core fall within Portland’s ride-for-free transit zone, connections between the OCC and the downtown lodging properties are always complimentary.

In addition to its eco-friendly light rail connection, the convention center has several other green features. Large windows wash hallways and lobbies in natural light, reducing the need for electricity. The innovative Rain Garden — designed to masquerade as an elegant water feature — actually scrubs pollutants from the rainwater that drains from the center’s massive roof. The water moves through a cleansing series of waterfalls, settling ponds and native grasses before entering the nearby Willamette River.

In October 2008, OCC was recertified with the LEED-EB Silver rating from the United States Green Building Council, making it the first convention center in the nation to achieve recertification at a higher rating. The new silver rating required proven sustainability accomplishments among areas of operation, maintenance and capital improvements.

Also, the OCC is the first convention center in the United States to earn Salmon-Safe certification. The designation was awarded for safeguards the facility has deployed to protect water quality and Pacific salmon habitat, as well as for commitments the organization has made to further reduce its environmental impact over time.
